OVERVIEW

A family in Medfield wanted an outdoor environment that could genuinely support their daily life — not a space reserved for summer entertaining, but one that worked across all four seasons and adapted to how the family actually spent time outside.

The property had good bones — generous lot, strong connection to the home — but no clear organisation. Elements had been added incrementally over the years without a governing idea. The result was a yard that worked in parts but never felt like a whole.

The central question became: how do you design a single outdoor environment that holds swimming in July, a fire in October, a cold plunge in February, and a family dinner in May — without any one element dominating the others?

THE LAND

The site offered relatively level ground with good southern exposure — ideal conditions for a pool, for planting, and for maximising usable season. The property backed onto a wooded buffer that provided natural privacy on two sides. The primary challenge was not constraint but organisation — how to arrange a full range of elements without the property feeling crowded or the design feeling assembled.

The wooded edge became an asset rather than a boundary — framing the outdoor rooms and providing the sense of enclosure that makes an outdoor space feel settled.

THE DESIGN

The landscape is organised around a clear compositional spine running from the home outward — pool at the centre, wellness and gathering to either side, kitchen and dining anchoring the transition from inside to outside. Each element is positioned in relation to the others so that the property functions as a single integrated environment rather than a collection of features.

The design was calibrated for use in every month of the year. The covered kitchen and dining structure extends the season in both directions. The cold plunge and sauna are positioned for year-round access, sheltered from the north. The fire area anchors the western edge, usable from the first cool evenings of September through late spring.

KEY ELEMENTS

  • Pool positioned as the compositional centre — its edges aligned with the home's architecture and the surrounding terrace structure

  • Sauna and cold plunge integrated into the northern edge — sheltered, private, and connected to the pool with a considered path

  • Covered outdoor kitchen and dining — anchoring the indoor-outdoor transition and extending the season into autumn and early spring

  • Fire area at the western edge — a gathering point that operates independently of the pool, usable across a long season

MATERIALS & CRAFT

Stone was used throughout as the unifying material — consistent in tone and texture across terraces, pool coping, and pathway surfaces, so that the various elements read as one composition rather than separate installations. Timber detailing in the covered structures was selected to age naturally alongside the planting, softening over time into the wooded edge behind.

Material consistency was a deliberate decision — with this many elements in one property, visual quiet was as important as any individual detail.

LIVING IN THE SPACE

The cold plunge is used before work several mornings a week, year-round. The pool is the centre of family life from May through September. The covered kitchen and fire area extend outdoor living well into November. In a typical week, some part of the outdoor environment is used every day.

What the family described as wanting — a space for daily life, not special occasions — is what the property delivers. The design earned that by being organised around how they actually live, not how they imagined they might.

You have exceeded our expectations for this project! We can’t say enough great things about team Ivy’s design vision and quality craftsmanship. Your team made the entire process smooth from the onset . . . thanks again for making our dreams come true.
