OVERVIEW
A family in Canton with a smaller residential lot wanted an outdoor environment that delivered the full range of outdoor living — pool, terrace, dining, gathering — without the property feeling crowded or any single element dominating the whole.
The site presented the classic challenge of compact luxury: limited square footage, ambitious programme, and a client who understood quality and would notice if any element had been compromised to make the others fit.
The central question became: how do you fit everything without it feeling like everything has been fitted — so that the finished environment reads as considered rather than crowded?
KEY ELEMENTS
Pool sized for the site rather than the programme — its proportions determined by the surrounding terrace and the views from the home, not by an arbitrary square footage target
Wraparound terrace in cut bluestone — maximising usable surface adjacent to the pool while maintaining visual calm through material consistency
Integrated outdoor kitchen at the terrace corner — fully specified in a compact footprint, positioned to face both the pool and the dining area simultaneously
MATERIALS & CRAFT
Cut bluestone throughout — its precision suited to the tight tolerances that a compact site demands. Where larger properties can absorb slight variations, a smaller site exposes them. Every joint, every edge, every transition was detailed with the understanding that it would be seen at close range.
Planting was selected for vertical interest — columnar and upright forms that add presence and privacy without consuming ground plane. On a compact site, planting that grows up rather than out is the difference between a finished environment and a crowded one.
LIVING IN THE SPACE
The pool is used daily through the season. The terrace holds the family's evening routine reliably — dinner outdoors becomes the default rather than the exception.
The kitchen functions at the level of the interior — guests are surprised to learn how compact it is because nothing about its operation reveals the constraint. The property feels larger than it is because every element is proportioned to the space rather than to an external standard.
“You guys were amazing from design all the way through every detail of construction. Thanks for making our dream come true on time and on budget!”
A landscape designed at full resolution — where working within constraint produced something more considered than abundance would have allowed.
