Natural Escape

A constrained site reorganised around privacy — dense planting and considered grade defining the enclosure.

OVERVIEW

A family in Needham with a constrained suburban lot wanted something that felt genuinely private — not screened or fenced, but enclosed in a way that felt natural and permanent.

The property is defined by its suburban context: close neighbours on three sides, a flat lot with minimal grade change, and views into the space from multiple angles. The existing landscape offered no privacy and no sense of enclosure.

The central question became: how do you create a landscape that feels private and removed without relying on walls or fences — using the land itself as the enclosing element?

KEY ELEMENTS

  • Layered boundary planting — evergreen structure anchored by deciduous mid-layer and perennial ground layer, creating enclosure that changes character across seasons

  • Sunken terrace at the garden's centre — a modest grade change that creates shelter and the psychological sense of being held within the space

  • Water feature positioned along the northern boundary — sound providing an additional layer of separation from neighbouring activity

MATERIALS & CRAFT

Bluestone for the primary surfaces — its cool tone and fine texture suited to the intimate scale of the designed space. Planting material was selected for density and year-round presence: species that hold their form in winter, provide structure in summer, and require minimal maintenance over time.

The planting is the primary material of this landscape. Stone plays a supporting role — grounding the space, providing surface — while the plants do the work of enclosure, movement, and seasonal variation.

LIVING IN THE SPACE

The terrace is used from early morning through evening in the warm months. Privacy was the first thing the family noticed — the sense of being in their own space, unreachable from the street or neighbouring lots.

The water feature is audible from the kitchen, which the family describes as something they hadn't anticipated but now find essential to how the space feels.

Working with the team at Ivy Studio was terrific! We lead very busy professional lives and couldn’t have done this without your team. Your work is exceptional, and our family loves every bit of our new outdoor space!
